About the Program & How To Sign Up

Lawyers in the Library is offered at the King Library, Monday nights 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

You may take advantage of a free 20-minute legal consultation with a volunteer attorney provided by the Pro Bono Project of Silicon Valley. The lawyer will meet with you in Lecture Room 257 on the Library's 2nd Floor — Floor map

Two Ways for You To See an Attorney:

  • Phone: You may call (408) 808-2355 on Monday-Friday during 8:00am-5:00pm to make an appointment for the following Monday. There are only 10 phone reservation openings (6:00, 6:20, etc.) per week and they fill up quickly. Note: A reservation made by phone guarantees a consultation only if you are present at the exact appointment time. If it is for 6:40, you must be present then.

  • Walk-in: If you are unable to make an appointment by phone, you have the option to visit the King Library on Monday at 5:30 pm sharp and add your name to a signup sheet located near Lecture Room 257 on the Library's 2nd Floor. Attorneys will see as many people as possible between 6:00pm and 8:00pm that evening in the order that names appear on the signup sheet. Note: There is no guarantee that an attorney will see you even if your name appears on the sheet.

Important Note: If you are limited in your speaking and understanding of English, you must bring with you someone who has English language skills to interpret for you and the attorney.

The sessions are designed to provide basic information on topics that can reasonably be covered in a single, 20-minute session, such as:

  • Landlord/tenant issues (e.g. evictions, security deposits, how to get repairs done)

  • Consumer law (e.g. debt collection, warranties, fraud, misrepresentation, bankruptcy)

  • Government benefits (e.g. Social Security, SSI, welfare)

  • Family law (e.g. divorce, custody matters)

  • Employment (e.g. unemployment compensation, wrongful termination)

  • Immigration (i.e. obtaining citizenship)

  • Wills & trusts
