Sofi Mendoza's Guide to Getting Lost in Mexico
by Malin Alegria
Without U.S. or Mexican papers, she was borderless. Sofi was caught in a web of two cultures, two languages, and one scary border. What would the authorities do with her? How would her parents get her out of Mexico now? Her head hurt. It was so not fair. Why was she in this horrible situation? None of her friends had had to go through this. Why her?
In many ways, Sofi Mendoza is an every day American teenager: she's looking forward to college, has a secret crush on the high school jock, reads Seventeen and CosmoGIRL, and can't wait until she gets her own car. But in other ways, Sofi feels different. Her classmates snicker at the fact that she's only in the intermediate Spanish class. And she constantly gets told, "You don't look Mexican."
When Sofi sneaks over the border to Tijuana for a classmate's Memorial Day party, she feels even more out of place. Seeing children running the streets begging for money, women selling souvenirs on the sidewalk, and a layer of dust covering everything; Sofi realizes why her parents decided to leave Mexico soon after she was born. On the way back to the U.S., Sofi gets stopped at the border and is denied access back into the country. Scared and confused, she ends up staying with relatives while the problem is solved. During her stay with her new family, Sofi realizes that her culturally mixed background is something to be proud of.
