Text
The Silicon Valley Library System (SVLS) is a regional consortium of Santa Clara County public libraries. The System Reference Center (SRC) provides second level reference service to SJPL through membership in SVLS. The role of second level reference is to provide reference service to member libraries when the resources of the local library are exhausted. Exhaustible local resources include staff time limitations, in addition to paper and electronic resource limitations.

The SRC also provides research services directly to patrons through InfoEdge, its paid research service. SRC offers a fee-based search and delivery service for obituaries from the San Jose Mercury and San Francisco Chronicle newspapers. The SRC’s Obituaries and Death Notices web page outlines its ordering procedure.

The SRC can be used two ways, as a resource for libraries and as a referral for patrons.

  • As a resource for libraries--When libraries pass reference questions on to the SRC, the local library retains the responsibility of providing an answer to the patron. Although an answer coming from the SRC ultimately helps the patron, SRC service is to the library, not the patron. The SRC can work to a patron-defined deadline. "As soon as possible" is not a deadline. If there is a date after which the information is no longer useful (such as when it is needed for an assignment), that date must be defined on the request form.
Libraries have four ways of sending a question to SRC.
    1. Use the Ask a Reference Question e-form at www.systemref.org/
    2. Send a fax to 650-349-5089 or 800-505-5583
    3. Phone 650-349-5538 or 800-644-6244
    4. Send an email to info@systemref.org .

  • As a referral for patrons--Patrons can be referred to the InfoEdge service when the service they want is out-of-scope for a public or academic library, e.g., they want research done, they don't want to do it themselves, but they are willing to pay someone else to do it for them. Typical InfoEdge services are document delivery, e.g. photocopying advertisements from several years of phone book yellow pages for a law firm, or a Dialog search that requires per search fees and librarian expertise. For an explanation of these services, see http://obit.systemref.org/obits_gen.htm
