COMMUNICATIONS POLICY, KING LIBRARY

print thisPrint This

Statement of Policy & Text
To meet the communications needs of the King Library, an annual communications plan is developed collaboratively by SJSU and SJPL representatives. The plan includes a process for regular review and adjustment throughout the year.

Need for the Policy
An annual communication plan for the King Library helps to coordinate communications strategies for the library’s messages and audiences. A joint plan reduces the likelihood of duplicated efforts and expenditures by SJSU and SJPL. This plan is in addition to any separate marketing plans created by the University Development Director and/or the San José Public Library Foundation to support their respective fundraising efforts.

Requirements & Guidelines
The Communications Plan should clearly identify needs, target audiences, key messages, strategies, tactics, targeted media budget requirements/responsibilities, and suggestions for collateral, promotions and promotional signage and advertising when appropriate.

Communication targeted solely toward the primary clients of either SJSU or SJPL will be determined by the specific library, using current policies and procedures, and is part of this plan.

The SJPL Marketing Communications Office leads the team that creates this annual plan and then presents it to the SJSU Dean and SJPL Director for approval.
  • Those holding the following positions comprise the team:
    • SJSU Outreach Librarian
    • SJPL Marketing Communications Director
    • SJSU Fund Development Officer (assigned to the Library)
    • SJSU Media Relations Officer (assigned to the Library)
    • SJPL Senior Librarian

Development of the annual plan always involves staff whose primary roles are communications and outreach. Other representation may vary from year to year, depending on the plan’s overall focus as conveyed by the Dean and Director. Information needed to complete the plan is typically drawn from staff with management responsibility for major service areas.
