PERIODICALS - LOCATION AND HOLDINGS POLICY

Statement of Policy & Text
  • SJPL and SJSU periodical collections are merged and shelved in the Lower Level Periodical stacks and the Lower Level Browsing area.
  • Current subscriptions are housed in both Lower Level Periodical Stacks and in Lower Level Browsing Area
  • All titles retained longer than one year are shelved in Lower Level Periodical stacks
  • The Library Catalog will reflect the proper location of periodical titles and is the primary source of determining where periodicals are located

Need for the Policy
Patrons need to easily locate periodicals. Having the periodical collection on one floor facilitates access. The browsing area was created to give ready access to popular periodicals and newspapers.

Requirements & Guidelines
  • Lower Level Periodicals Browsing Area:
    • Periodicals Browsing Area is located in the Lower Level of the King Library and includes all SJPL periodical titles and selected SJSU periodical titles.
    • Are shelved in LC Call number order
    • Are self service
    • Are Library Use Only and should not be removed from the Lower Level
    • Are kept on Browsing display shelves for one year
    • Are kept for varying time periods; for example, some titles are only retained for a year or only the latest issue is kept
    • If a title is retained for more than a year, older issues are pulled and shelved in Periodicals Lower Level stacks


  • Lower Level Periodicals stacks:
    • Includes both SJSU and SJPL periodicals
    • Are shelved in LC Call number order
    • Are self service
    • Are Library Use Only and should not be removed from the Lower Level of the King Library
    • Includes both bound and unbound issues shelved together and located in the compact shelving area
    • Includes titles with both current and closed subscriptions

  • Newspapers:
    • Includes both SJSU and SJPL newspapers
    • Are located in the Periodical Browsing Area on the Lower Level of the King Library
    • Are shelved by title in alphabetical order
    • Are Library Use Only and should not be removed from the Lower Level of the King Library
    • Are self service
    • Today's copy of popular newspapers are kept on display shelving by the Lower Level service desk
    • Are retained/held for varying time periods; some titles are kept until the microform is received
