California Room Database Search Help

Two Search Methods: Search by Keyword | Browse by Subject

Search by Keyword:

  • The search function automatically defaults to a phrase search. You do not need to place quotation marks around a phrase.
example: san jose (not "san jose")

  • Names in the Database are often listed both first name first and last name first. We recommend that you include both versions and place an "or" between them.
example: clyde arbuckle or arbuckle clyde

  • You must use Boolean operators (and, or, not) to combine search words or phrases.
example: santa clara and industry and not county

  • Search result entries include a hyperlinked title (in bold) and a full record hyperlink. Both hyperlinks open a popup window with location and other information.
    example:
Santa Clara City - Battle Of Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA CITY - BATTLE OF SANTA CLARA Clipping File-Santa Clara County Envelopes
    full record

Browse by Subject:

  • Select a link in the A-Z list to browse the subject entries under that combination of letters.

  • If you select List All it may take a while to load all entries for that letter.
  • The first item in an entry is the Subject in brownish font. If there is no subject in an entry, its subject is the same as the subject of the closest entry above which contains a subject.

  • The Location field is also important. All materials in the Database can be found in the California Room with two exceptions which are noted in relevant entries:

    • King Library Lower Level
    • San Jose Historical Museum = Research Center of History San José

  • Select the full record link in order to see the full record, including the Note field.
