How To Block Pop-up Windows for Free

Mozilla 1.3+ or Netscape 7.01+ | Opera | Safari 1.1+ | Pop-up-Blocking Freeware and Toolbars

Many resources in Web Links by Subject are commercial websites which generate pop-up and pop-under windows containing ads. This is how these sites pay their bills, but such pop-ups can be annoying when you are looking for information. For this reason, we include this page on Blocking Pop-ups and also identify in Web Links by Subject when a website has pop-ups.

Note: Unfortunately, the Internet Explorer (IE) browser currently has no internal settings for blocking pop-up ads. If you use the IE browser, you will have to install a program for blocking such ads or a "toolbar" which does the trick:

Mozilla 1.3+ or Netscape 7.01+

  • Check the box next to "Suppress popups"
-- Select the "Exceptions" button to add websites where you allow popups

  • You can also ask the browser to alert you to a blocked pop-up by playing a sound or displaying an icon in the Navigator status bar
