Outstanding Contributor to Child Care Awards
The Outstanding Contributor to Child Care Awards is an annual event that provides an opportunity to show our appreciation to individuals and/or organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the needs of young children and their families particularly within quality, licensed child care.
2010 Award recipients will be officially recognized in April 2010 at a casual reception and in the San José City Hall Council Chambers. The Nomination Application (English | Spanish) is available online for submission. More information to follow for 2010 award recipients.
2009 awardees are:
- Moreland School District Pre-School
Moreland provides children with excellent toys with different temperatures (ice blocks), textures, shapes, and creativity levels. Site visits determined that it is a safe place, gated with parents only having access with an access card. They have a 9-1 ratio. The Nominator quotes:
"children feel it is truly their world and they have the freedom to manipulate and re-organize it."
- Buddhist Church Lotus Pre-School
Lotus preschool is known for enriching children with the Japanese culture and for its strong ties within their community. Culturally enriching activities include a daily trip to the local Buddhist temple for a 15 minute ceremony, monthly visits to the local Japanese Senior Center, celebrations of all Japanese holidays, as well as the teaching of basic Japanese language. Lotus Preschool has been opened and located in Japan Town for 22 years. Lotus is able to provide quality care and education at an extremely affordable price.
- Cisco: Families @ First Center
Cisco provides their employees with state of the art childcare facilities for infants through preschool aged children. In addition, they have a site for school aged children that is available on school holidays and for the summer in order to ease the stress for employees in finding care for all of their children. Cisco Families @ First also provides a small library and after care activities that encourage parent-child interactions/activities.
- Silicon Valley Education Foundation
Silicon Valley Education Foundation has been nominated for the George R. Howard Memorial Award for the strength of their school readiness component for children from 0-5 in the City of San Jose. They have served more than 3300 families since 2005.
To add their well rounded services they provide families with other resources and referrals such as internet access, food banks, housing support, and parent workshops among other resources that are needed for a successful family to promote healthy development and kinder readiness.
Children's Art Displays
Throughout the month of April, Month of the Young Child (MOYC) focuses on the responsibilities we all have in the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of children.
Displaying children's art provides insight into the imagination and development of young children.
These Children's Art Displays are a means of helping the public understand the value of childhood creativity.
