  • Building evacuation will occur upon notification by University Police (UPD), alarm or other authority.
  • Be aware of all marked exits and evacuation routes from your area of the building.
  • When officially told to evacuate, leave by the nearest exit and alert others to do the same. Do not go higher or deeper into building once an evacuation has begun.
  • Take important personal items with you such as medication, wallet, and cell phone if possible.

  • Notify UPD or a Building Emergency Team (BET) member (wearing an orange vest) of a disabled person waiting to be evacuated. Note their location.

  • Once outside, move to the assembly point designated for your unit. Remain there until an accurate headcount has been taken.
  • Keep streets and walkways next to exits clear for emergency vehicles and personnel. Keep the street side of building clear so that emergency equipment and personnel can reach the building.

Ranking Employee

Ranking employee duties are assigned on a rotating basis and are in effect whenever Library Administration is off duty, generally after 5 pm and on weekends. A single authority must be identified for all hours the King Library is open, to resolve complaints and give direction in emergencies.

Schedule

Ranking Employee designations will appear on each day’s unit schedule.

Responsibilities are assigned as follows:

  • Sunday: Access Services-SJSU All day
  • Monday: Access Services-SJSU From 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. (fall and spring).

  • Wednesday: KPRR From 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    Summer - KPRR from 5-8 p.m.
  • Friday: King Library Children's Room From 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: KPRR All day
  • Monday through Thursday and Sunday: SJSU Access Services – after public closing

General Duties

  • Represent Library administration in making decisions affecting the public service of the Dr. King Library.
  • Field customer complaints and resolve/refer as appropriate.
  • Provide a written report for King Library managers of incidents as a follow up for the next working day.

King Library Closures

In situations where the level of hazard is uncertain (for example a vague bomb threat), the Ranking Employee will make the determination as to whether or not to close the Library in consultation with Administration and/or Security. However, in a situation where there is a clear need to evacuate the building, the University Police Department have the authority and jurisdiction over decisions made regarding the opening/closure of the King Library.

The Ranking Employee works with Officers to communicate the concerns of the Library and advises King Library and branch employees of the situation, as appropriate.

The Ranking Employee will:

  • Notify Administration when the King Library must be closed or evacuated. The 'King Library Emergency Contact List' lists administrator names and phone numbers. The Emergency Contact List should be included in each unit's emergency kit.
  • Notify Branches if there is a closure of the King Library. Contact Branches using the phone numbers on the SJPL Telephone Directory.
  • Consult with the person in charge of the Access Services Unit and the person in charge of Information Technology to determine the impact on Branches of a King Library closure, and notify Branches as appropriate.

Emergency Duties

  • The severity of the emergency situation will guide the Ranking Employee’s determination as to which emergency agency to contact. Options, in order of severity, are: 911, UPD (x4-2222), and the Security Control Room (x2635).
  • The Ranking Employee will work with the public safety officers in emergency situations.
  • The Ranking Employee will provide leadership and guidance for King Library employees during an emergency.
  • Employees serving as the Ranking Employee will receive Building Emergency training.
  • The Ranking Employee will meet with Security Staff at the South Gate (security kiosk at the campus entrance) to coordinate.
  • The Ranking Employee will set up at the Assembly Area with the orange box of Incident Command equipment. The Incident Command Assembly Area, identified by the Incident Command Umbrella, will be located at the triangle in the terrazzo in Caret Plaza outside the campus entrance to King Library. The Ranking Employee will assume charge of the situation at that location.
  • Units will designate how their employees are to be accounted for. Employees will check in with their unit representative who in turn will report the names of missing staff persons at the Incident Command Assembly Area. The checklist of King Library units is included in the box of Incident Command equipment.
  • In the event of an emergency evacuation, the Ranking Employee will ask other King employees to secure the library entrances.
  • The Ranking Employee will be informed that the building can be re-entered by a representative from UPD. The Ranking Employee will then inform employees who are scheduled to work on a Service Desk that they can re-enter through the main King Library entrance or via the employee entrance adjacent to the loading dock.
  • After waiting 5-10 minutes for employees to get to the Service Desks, the building can be opened to the public.

All SJPL staff must report to their unit representative or ranking lead and wait for directives. Never leave the premises until proper clearance is given by Administration.
