About: About the King Library

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library

Where Knowledge and Community Connect

Opened in 2003, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library was the first in the United States to merge the resources and services of a major public library – San José Public Library – and an academic institution – San José State University. This innovative global model redefines access to information, making a vast collection of materials, technologies, and learning spaces freely available to the public and university community alike.

Originally envisioned by former San José Mayor Susan Hammer and SJSU President Robert L. Caret, the King Library serves as both the City’s Main Library and San José State’s University Library. It is co-managed by the City Librarian and the University Library Dean under a Joint Library Operating Agreement.

Spanning nine floors, the library houses diverse collections, public art installations, flexible workspaces, technology-equipped meeting rooms, exhibit areas, and Wi-Fi access – creating a space for studying, creativity, and connection. It is a place where students, educators, community, and visitors come not only to find information, but to engage with one another, learn from one another, and most importantly build community.

The King Library honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by serving as a welcoming space for lifelong learning, civic engagement, and ensuring that everyone has the right to equal access for information.
