Statement of Policy & Text
Music scores identified as collected works series and shelved in the Library of Congress classification areas M2 and M3 in the SJSU Library’s Music Collection are available for in library use only.
Need for the Policy
Collected works series are essential sources for the study of western classical music and as such are a permanent part of the Music Research Collection. These expensive reference sources consist of multiple volumes that are often expensive and difficult to replace. To ensure that these volumes will be available to current and future students and faculty, they are maintained as a non-circulating collection. All volumes are marked “Library Use Only” and coded as such in the library catalog.
Requirements & Guidelines
The non-circulating status of individual series titles is determined by the Music & Dance Liaison in consultation with the Library Committee of the School of Music & Dance. These volumes are designated Library Use Only based on the following criteria:
- Collected works of individual composers
- Scholarly series devoted to a genre, period, or country
- The volumes are classified as collections of music sources (in Library of Congress areas M2-M2.3) and collected works of individual composers (LC areas M3-M3.3) and shelved in the Music Reference Collection. The individual volumes may be cataloged as a continuation of the series or cataloged separately under their own titles.
Only SJSU Faculty may check out individual volumes following the guidelines posted in the Circulation of Reference Materials policy. The collected editions will be available for interlibrary loan under the guidelines for non-circulating reference materials.
